Heartworm disease is a very preventable illness. Rockbrook Animal Clinic recommends that your dog be on heartworm preventative year round. We dispense Heartgard at Rockbrook Animal Clinic and this can be purchased in packs of 6 or 12.
Heartworms can be transmitted to your dog by mosquitoes. If your pet has not been on any form of heartworm preventative, they could potentially get this deadly illness. All dogs are at risk for heartworm disease, however, Heartgard offers protection against this disease.
By giving your pet a Heartgard chewable, any immature heartworms that were given to your dog by a mosquito over the previous 30 days will be killed. The chewable will then need to be given every 30 days following the initial dose to get ideal results. Heartgard can protect against various intestinal parasites as well, such as hookworms and roundworms.
Rockbrook Animal Clinic requires an annual heartworm test before dispensing Heartgard. This test checks for any sign of heartworm disease, as there could be complications of taking Heartgard if your pet is already infected with the disease.
